Morland Estate is 60 years old in 2021.
Morland Estate opened in January 1961 - and when it did it took the number of council homes built in Hackney since the war past the 4000 mark.
Today that number is far higher!
The estate’s three low-rise and one high-rise tower blocks were designed by the borough’s chief assistant architect RH Harrison. The estate sits on land that was once Victorian housing that was destroyed by a World War II flying bomb. Today Morland Estate is our home and our community - and we have
Tell us your story
During 2021 Morland Estate TRA, working with Hackney Council, will celebrate our 60th anniversary by helping residents to tell their stories and share their memories of the estate with a series of portrait photographs of the people who live here. We aim to publish these photo stories online while we’re in lockdown - and once restrictions are lifted we can get outside and celebrate together! We’d love you to take part – if you want to share your story with your neighbours, let us know!
Simply email morlandblanchardTRA@gmail.com to discuss.
In taking and compiling the photos and your stories we will of course follow COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. Morland’s community in action!
Morland ESTATE TRA
Morland Estate Tenants and Residents Association represents all residents living on Morland Estate. We are a voluntary group led and run by people living on the estate and are recognised by Hackney Council as the voice for residents here. Morland just held Hackney’s first-ever online TRA AGM Among our achievements in recent years has been the transformation of our outdoor communal space, with a thriving communal garden growing fruit and veg and a new independently funded natural play space with hedges and tree planting. In 2019 we installed a plaque on Richmond Road to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the WWII bombing - remembering war’s victims then and now - and the robin mural alongside it is now an estate landmark.
The TRA represents residents on day-to-day matters like repairs, improvements and anti-social behaviour, with regular resident meetings across the year. Each summer (pandemic permitting) we host a communal big lunch event.
